I saw this on amazon. The one pictured here is Samantha but they also have Kit and Molly. They're not made by AG but they're still cute!!

Here's a link that shows all the watches. There's also a Nellie watch but it's not pictured.

Aren't they using illegal copyright laws?? If another company is producing someone's copywrite material without permission and making a profit it is considered illegal. right?? double checking here.

Wow...that is really cute! Some people are so creative. I never would have thought of making a watch that way. Thanks for the link!

I'm not really sure. I would think so. I just thought they were cute watches.
I don't know if there are legal issues. For now it looks like anyone can order them. After looking at it, it's labeled as "Samantha doll watch". It doesn't say "American Girl" anywhere in the name or description, so I'm not sure if that's allowed or not. There may be other dolls made by other companies that have the names Samantha, Molly, or any of the others, so maybe they can get away with it.

I just ammended my beginning post to show a page with all the "doll watches" including one that says doll lover and a Nellie watch, that is available but not pictured. The watches look high quality and cost $35 each.

You can't copyright a name, but they do have the names trademarked.
I would say the Molly watch comes very close to infringement- it is an identical outfit to her meet outfit! The samantha one looks like an outfit she wears in her book, but not one they sell, and the kit one doesn't really look anything like kit. So they would have a harder time proving they were trying to use their trademarks... but I think they would have a case on Molly.
Edit to add: It is also possible that they have a license to use the characters. You never know. I guess someone could "tell on them" to ask Mattel if they are licensed, but my guess is AG reads these boards, and companies like Mattel have people who watch for little violations like this, so if they don't have a license, chances are Mattel knows about it, already, or will soon because of this discussion.

I think that they are pretty cute, but I would never buy one for $35. Then again, I hate wearing watches! LOL! I think that the dress Samantha is wearing on the watch is her talent show dress. That's what it looks like to me, anyway.

I don't know for sure either. They don't say American Girl, they don't say the girl's names on the watch, and they are not downloaded exact pictures from AG, like we've seen on some clocks and other items.

I can't see the picture. It says "No image available". I know I could see it earlier, did it change or am I looking in the wrong place?
The Product Specifications for the Samantha watch include this:
Model number: ag-samantha
Hmmm...I'm surprised they can make these.
